Wild Yam is used to relieve spasmodic gastrointes-tinal complaints such as bilious colic and flatulence. It is useful in chronic liver problems and painful gallstones. It also assists in ovarian and uterine pains, such as menstrual cramps. Its anti-inflammatory action helps relieve the discomfort of rheumatoid arthritis, even in the acute phase. Wild Yam has been used in the manufacture of contraceptive hormones, however the herb does not have a contraceptive effect.
