Valerian is an excellent nerve tonic and as such helps greatly with anxiety, stress, and insomnia and is also used for more serious psychosomatic ailments like hysteria and panic attacks. It is an effective muscle relaxant and antispasmodic, useful for muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, and intestinal colic. Some people find it to be effective for pain relief.
