In Chinese herbalism, the dried berries of Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi) are used as a tonic and astringent, primarily for the heart, lungs and kidneys. It is said to keep one from losing physical, mental and spiritual energy.
In Western Herbal Medicine Schisandra is often used as a stimulating nervine tonic with an affinity for the liver, enhancing phase I and II liver detoxification. It is the berry of the plant that is used and thus it has potent antioxidant properties.
